NEWS: Tweetsii launched by GyPSii

Access local tweets, along with other nearby data
Tweetsii launched by GyPSii

GyPSii has announced the launch of Tweetsii – an iPhone app that lets you see who’s tweeting nearby, and also access information on what there is to see and do in any particular area.

Tweetsii hooks in to other location-based networks like Foursquare and Gowalla, letting you access their information, but it allows allows the user to create their own locations and add comments and photos, rather than just “checking in”. At festivals, conferences and events it could be quite useful viewing tweets nearby without necessarily following those people. Future versions of the app will also be able to check in to the Foursquare and Gowalla networks.

Tweetsii is a free download for the iPhone, and it’s available in the App Store now. There aren’t versions for other platforms available yet, but versions for BlackBerry and Android are planned for the future. If you’re desperate to code your own version for your favourite platform, you maybe be able to soon – combining the Foursquare, Gowalla, Twitter and soon-to-be-open Gypsii APIs.

Palm offering discounted contract-free phones to developers — too bad they’re carrier locked

Usually when we hear the phrase “contract-free developer phone” the words “unlocked” and “GSM” follow shortly thereafter, but apparently Palm didn’t get the memo — it just announced discounted hardware prices for its devices, but they’re carrier-locked to Verizon and Sprint. Yeah, that’s a big sad face out of us — it’s not like Verizon’s going to give you a cheaper plan if you show up with a contract-free device. In fact, you might be better off picking up a $79 Pre on a Sprint contract from Amazon and just canceling after a year or so — the ETF will have been prorated to $120 by then, putting you way ahead of Palm’s $439 price tag. So much for that dream — at least we still have our fantasy of driving to Mexico for an illicit Telcel Pre smuggling run.

German student shows off camera-based input on an iPhone

Using a camera as an input device is hardly a new idea — even on a mobile device — but most examples so far have been to enable functionality not possible on a touchscreen. As Master’s student Daniel Bierwirth has shown in the video after the break, however, a phone on a camera can also be used as an alternative input method for features like scrolling or zooming, potentially allowing for easier interaction on devices with smaller screens. Bierwirth also takes the idea one step further, and sees the system eventually including a second camera that’s worn by a person, which would be able to detect when your hands are near the phone and allow for a range of other gestures. Check out his full report at the link below.

MSI Displays Android-Based VoIP Video Conferencing Phone at CeBIT

MSI, Android, Future Gadget, VoIP Phone, CeBIT 2010
Now, when those landline phones are steadily falling into landfills, it’ll take an effort too large for a manufacturer to lure us back into them. MSI thought of doing so by fixing in an Android system into a DECT enabled landline-VoIP hybrid phone, which guarantees video conferencing and instant messaging over the Android platform. This displayed at the CeBIT in Germany, besides the Android novelty, the phone’s being fitted with LAN ports, a USB port and a card reader, which means there’s scope for some multimedia content as well.

Water Pebble watches you (and your water usage) in the shower

Water Pebble helps you to stop wasting water by taking too long in the shower (Photo: Prie...

In today’s water-conscious environment, any device that helps conserve precious H2O should be applauded. Paul Priestman from design company Priestmangoode has created the Water Pebble – a gadget that monitors how long you’re taking in the shower by flashing red when it’s time to get out. But what makes Water Pebble different from other timing devices is that the Water Pebble memorizes how long you took for your first shower and sets about gradually minimizing the amount of water you use by reducing the time it takes for the device to flash red in subsequent showers…

NEWS: Vodafone UK getting HTC Desire

Operator confirms Legend exclusive
Vodafone getting HTC Desire

The HTC Desire is turning out to be the mobile equivalent of the village bike – every operator’s getting a ride. The latest to announce UK availability for the handset is Vodafone. The network had previously only said it’d be coming to Europe. Interestingly, that means that it’ll be available alongside the Nexus One.

As previously reported, the HTC Desire offers a whopping 3.7-inch AMOLED display, Android 2.1, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and HTC’s much-liked Sense UI. On top of that, Vodafone will pre-load its “360″ services, including Music and MyWeb. It’ll have full access to the Android Marketplace, too. It’ll land in April.

The operator also confirmed that it’ll be exclusively selling the HTC Legend at launch. That handset, which analysts have described as a replacement to the HTC Hero, has a smaller 3.2-inch AMOLED display, a 5-megapixel camera, and optical trackpad in place of the old trackball on the Hero. That’ll be showing up in April, too.

The only network yet to confirm whether or not it’ll be offering the HTC Desire is O2.
